Forest Edge Community Project | Women Empowerment, Conservation & Volunteering in Kibale, Uganda

Make a Real Difference at the Edge of Kibale Forest

Forest Edge Community Project for volunteering at Little Monkey Camp
Community activities near Little Monkey Camp at Kibale forest

Forest Edge Community Project brings together women, families, and local leaders at the edge of Kibale Forest in western Uganda. We created this initiative to generate sustainable income, strengthen communities, and promote conservation. Because communities live alongside elephants, chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys, and other wildlife, we focus on solutions that benefit both people and nature.

Empowering Women Through Enterprise

First and foremost, we empower women through income-generating activities. Local women create handmade crafts, share traditional skills, and perform cultural dances for visitors. As a result, they earn income to support their families, pay school fees, improve household welfare, and build financial independence. At the same time, they preserve and celebrate their cultural heritage.

Promoting Community and Wildlife Coexistence

In addition, we help communities develop positive relationships with wildlife. Although wildlife contributes to the area’s natural beauty and tourism potential, animals sometimes enter farms and damage crops. Therefore, we raise conservation awareness and encourage practical approaches that help people and wildlife coexist. Through education and community engagement, we inspire local residents to value and protect the forest and its wildlife.

Creating Meaningful Volunteer Experiences

Furthermore, we welcome volunteers from around the world who want to make a positive impact while experiencing authentic Ugandan culture. Volunteers contribute skills in education, marketing, tourism development, photography, social media, conservation awareness, business development, and community empowerment. Consequently, they help strengthen local initiatives while gaining valuable cultural and professional experience.

Working with Little Monkey Camp

To support our mission, we partner with Little Monkey Camp, a community-focused lodge near Kibale Forest. The camp hosts volunteers and travelers who want to explore the region responsibly. In turn, tourism generates income for local families, supports community projects, and creates opportunities for cultural exchange. Through this partnership, visitors directly contribute to local development and conservation efforts.

Supporting Local Tourism Through Peter’s Fishing Tours

Similarly, we collaborate with Peter’s Fishing Tours to showcase the region’s lakes, fishing traditions, and natural beauty. Visitors enjoy authentic local experiences while learning about the community’s way of life. Meanwhile, local guides and service providers earn income from tourism activities. As tourism grows, more families benefit from sustainable economic opportunities.

Building a Better Future

Ultimately, we strive to create a future where women thrive, communities prosper, and wildlife flourishes. By combining culture, conservation, tourism, and community development, we create opportunities that deliver lasting benefits. Every volunteer, visitor, craft purchase, and cultural performance strengthens local livelihoods and helps protect the unique environment surrounding Kibale Forest.

Together, we can build stronger communities, empower women, and create a future where people and wildlife thrive side by side.

Little Monkey Camp

At Little Monkey Camp, volunteers become part of a unique community where people and wildlife share the same landscape. Located on the edge of the world-famous Kibale National Park, our camp works with local women and families living alongside elephants, baboons, chimpanzees, snakes, and other wildlife.

Human-wildlife conflict is a daily reality for many communities around the forest. To create sustainable income opportunities, Little Monkey Camp established a women’s group that produces handmade crafts, performs traditional dances, and shares local culture with visitors.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers who want to contribute their skills while experiencing authentic rural Uganda.
